Ref  YZ5   Carved Agate Monkey

Remarkable fantasie ring depicting a carved agate monkey head, circa 1760 - 1780. During the 18th century a new type of 'fantasie' or fancy ring reflected the amusements of society.
Monkeys have long been a popular motif in European art. As well as being entertaining, monkeys were considered to be  full of ‘plaguy tricks and the very worst of human vices' and were frequently used to satirise human foibles, follies and vanities. This gold ring supports a carved agate monkey head within a silver set, rose-cut diamond surround, flanked with shoulders set with a foiled ruby and sapphire. The reverse of the shank is reeded. The ring is size O and 1/2 [US 7 and 1/4] and can be sized, and the monkey head measures 1/2 an inch by 1/3 of an inch. Completely original and immaculate.
