Ref  SB5  Medusa

Unusually large and fine quality Bull's Mouth shell cameo in a high carat gold mount with gold wirework decoration, circa 1870. The subject is Medusa, depicted in profile with drooped wings, serpents in her hair and serpents forming a fillet [ribbon] under her chin. The carving is after an ancient engraved gem from the cabinet of Strozzi. The brooch measures 3 inches by 2 and 1/3 inches and the cameo measures 2 and 1/3 inches by 1 and 3/4 inches. Fine carving, immaculate condition.
